Learning Hebrew: Three Entry Points
Mekom Torah offers three classes for learning the Hebrew language. All meet online via Zoom.
All are fun and welcoming, with no grades, just encouragement and pay-off for hard work.
Here is a guide for choosing between them:
All are fun and welcoming, with no grades, just encouragement and pay-off for hard work.
Here is a guide for choosing between them:
1. How to Read Hebrew: Learn the Hebrew alphabet and the basics of the vowel system. If you want to be able to follow along and sound out Hebrew as it is printed in the Jewish prayer book and the Hebrew Bible, this class is for you. After this, you will be ready for Introduction to Prayer Book Hebrew. Five sessions of 1.25 hours each. Taught by Laura Lee Blechner.
2. Introduction to Prayer Book Hebrew: If you are brand new or fairly new to Hebrew and want to participate fluently in Jewish services and follow along in the prayer book with understanding, this class is for you. This is the next step after How to Read Hebrew. 24 sessions of 1.25 hours each. Taught by Laura Lee Blechner.
3. Biblical Hebrew for Everyone: If your goal is to learn to read the Hebrew Bible in the original, with deep understanding, this class is for you. Maybe you studied Hebrew years ago; maybe you chant Torah in synagogue or actively participate in Hebrew prayer; maybe you teach Hebrew School; maybe you know some Modern Hebrew. We start at the beginning, assuming no vocabulary, but this class tends to work best for people who've had some contact with Hebrew already. 40 sessions of 1.5 hours each. Taught by Rabbi Helen Plotkin.
